Bedford County Fire Rescue
Station 9

A LITTLE ABOUT US

Based in the middle part of Tennessee and nuzzled between insterstates I-24 and I-65, is Bedford County, Tennessee.  With companies such as Calsonic, WalMart Distribution, Tyson Foods, Bedford County Schools, National Pen Corporation, Josten Inc,  amongst others, as well as the "easy way of life" and laid back atmosphere, that makes Bedford County, one of the most sought after counties to reside in..

Founded in 1807 when the citizens of Rutherford County living south of the Duck River and the Stones River successfully petitioned the governor to split Rutherford County in two. The new county was named after American Revolutionary War officer and large landowner in the area, Thomas Bedford. Once the state's largest and most populous county, Bedford County's size (in terms of area) has been steadily reduced since 1809. The county was pro-Confederate during the Civil War, but Shelbyville was mostly loyal to the Union. Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest was born in 1821 in Chapel Hill (now in Marshall County). Texas pioneer William Whitaker Reed was born in Bedford County in 1816.

The Bedford County Fire Department (BCFR) serves approximately 46,000 residents within a 482 square-mile radius of Bedford County, Tennessee. Included in this area is the Tennessee Fire Service and Code Enforcement Academy.

The BCFD operates in 8 districts with 9 stations, 140 firefighters and 31 apparatus. Fire Station 1 Headquarters is staffed around the clock by career firefighters. Stations 2-9 are staffed completely by volunteers firefights. Station 1 also uses volunteers for manpower on an as-needed basis. All of our Volunteer Departments, with the exception of Wartrace Fire Department (Station 6) and Bell Buckle Fire Department (Station 7) are entities of the BCFD. Wartrace Fire Department and Bell Buckle Fire Department are stand-alone volunteer departments that have signed automatic mutual aid agreements with the BCFD. We also stand ready to assist Shelbyville Fire Department as requested.

In addition to fire suppression and prevention, the BCFR also provides light and heavy rescue, emergency medical first response and public fire education. The BCFR, in coordination with other agencies, provides HAZMAT response as well.
